Insomnia Alzheimer’s

Current science continues to demonstrate that the reason we are moving away from health and develop chronic disease caused by our environment rather than our genes. Less than 1% of chronic disease is indeed genetic in nature. Essentially, this means that chronic disease is preventable.

Yet more than half of the U.S. population has been diagnosed with a chronic illness and almost 80% of all health care spending (doctors' visits, prescriptions, hospitalizations, etc.) are a result of these conditions of life.

This figure is expected to rise astronomically in the next few years. In fact, many say this single problem, it will bankrupt our nation. Interesting. It is particularly interesting because the science tells us this is entirely preventable!

What are chronic diseases? The list includes conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, infertility, autoimmune problems and disorders, Alzheimer's, dementia, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, acid reflux, Constipation, insomnia, decreased libido, and so on.

With a list this expansive, it is difficult to imagine how we could prevent these conditions from developing countries in the first place. They seem so unrelated. To understand our role in preventing chronic diseases, first we must have a basic understanding of how chronic disease develops as a result of our environment.

For to explain how our lifestyle and environment related to chronic disease, I'd like to share with you a visual that Dr. James Chestnut, B.Ed., M.Sc., DC, CCWP of The Wellness practice in Victoria, BC teacher. Imagine that when life begins, you are born into a pool of water. You have two items on you, inflatable water wings and an empty backpack.

Your water wings have been inflated for you, but they have a very slow leak. The air in them is expected to last 120 years (the "healthy" human life). As the air leaking out of them, you have less time left. It's called getting older! If there is no interference to these water wings, they will last you the entire 120 years.

Every time you make a lifestyle choice that is incongruent with your innate genetic requirements for health, add a "rock" to your backpack. Our blueprint for health and optimal function requires purity and sufficient in the way we eat, move and think. This means giving our body exactly what is required for optimal health (purity) and provides enough of it (adequacy).

No where in our plan for optimal function, we find toxic and lack of choice of lifestyle. Toxicity and deficiency is incongruent with homeostatic cell function. Therefore, it is these toxic and inadequate choices that are stones in your backpack.

These rocks (stressors) can come from any area of life: poor nutritional choices, sedentary living, obesity, are chronically stressed, having unhealthy relationships, remove toxic substances, not feeling loved or appreciated, excessive negative stimuli, have poor posture, smoking or exposure to fumes, not enough time outside, and so on.

So many of our toxic and lack of lifestyle choices is a direct result of an industrialized, "advanced" societies. It is difficult to argue that we are "advanced" in the field of health and wellness when we are experiencing drastic increases in chronic diseases in all age groups, in spite of our "advanced" work to treat these conditions.

The stones slowly sinking us. They have a cumulative effect on our health over the years. In the beginning, we did not notice. Finally, we realize that our daily lives have become more stressful and more of a struggle. Often we are not even sure how or when this happened.

It is not a drug on the planet that can remove the stones for you! It is therefore to treat the symptoms or effects of these stones are unsuccessful in relation to fixing the real problem. The drug, in fact, may be even a poisonous rock. (Just listen to side effects of drugs commercial!) Removing body parts do not fare not much better in solving the problem. We are not sinking because of lack of medicines or many body parts! The body is not "stupid". It shows a completely normal physiological adaptation to an environmental stressor.

The stones have a different effect on your health picture. As more rocks are added to your backpack, and you sink ever lower, the pressure of the water increase the wings, forcing the air to escape at a faster rate. You lose years of your life faster than originally intended … you age faster.

It is these incongruent lifestyle choices, or stressors, which is the catalyst for chronic disease. These toxic and lack of choice resulting in what is called our allostatic load. A chronic allostatic load, as a result of months and years of incongruent lifestyle choices, changes in our genetic expression, our cellular function, our physiology, our biology, our whole internal environment, and ultimately our expression of health. This is how chronic disease progresses.

It is obvious that the way to restore health is to remove stones from the bag, thereby reducing pressure on water your wings!

Ultimately, this means reducing our toxic and lack of options while increasing clean and adequate choice. This changes our environment and change expression of our genetics. This is the science of epigenetikk – how our environment determines the expression of our genetic code.

Fortunately, science has shown us blueprint. We know what choices to move towards health. We can solve the problem. Adopt a lifestyle that is similar to our previous (and healthier) ancestors is the most effective way to meet our innate genetic requirements for health and well-being while preventing chronic disease.
